How to Maintain a High Gloss Shine on Polished Quartz Worktops

A polished quartz surface straight from installation is brilliant and lustrous — it reflects light beautifully and makes the kitchen feel spacious and high-end. Keeping it that way requires understanding what dulls the polish and how to prevent it.

What Dulls a Polished Quartz Surface

The main enemies of high-gloss quartz are greasy films, hard water deposits, and microscopic scratching from abrasive materials. A thin layer of cooking oil residue or soapy film left to dry on the surface creates a hazy appearance that reduces the reflective quality of the polish. It is not damage — but it dulls the visual effect significantly until removed.

The Daily Maintenance Routine

After cooking or any activity involving water or food contact, wipe the surface with a damp microfibre cloth, then dry it completely with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. This two-step wipe-and-dry routine prevents water marks and greasy films from settling. It takes seconds and is the single most effective thing you can do to maintain the original polish long-term.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

  • Leaving surfaces wet: When water evaporates, dissolved minerals remain as limescale. Always dry after washing.
  • Using abrasive scouring pads: These create microscopic scratches that permanently reduce the reflective quality. Always use soft cloths or non-scratch sponges.
  • Waxing or polishing: Quartz does not benefit from topical wax or polish — these products leave residue that attracts dust and can actually reduce the natural polish.
  • Harsh chemicals: Bleach, oven cleaner, and ammonia-based products all damage the resin binder over time.

Restoring a Dull Surface

If your polished surface has developed a persistent haze from greasy film buildup, a diluted solution of isopropyl alcohol in water will cut through the residue effectively. Apply with a soft cloth, wipe clean, and dry thoroughly. The polish should be restored immediately.
