How to Remove Limescale from Quartz Worktops Safely

If you live in a hard water area — which covers most of London and the South East — limescale on your kitchen worktop is an ongoing reality. The chalky white deposits that form around taps, sink rims, and water-contact areas can make even a pristine quartz surface look neglected. Here is how to deal with them safely.

Understanding Limescale on Quartz

Limescale is calcium carbonate — the mineral residue left when hard water evaporates. It accumulates on the surface of quartz rather than within it (the non-porous nature prevents penetration), which means it can always be removed with the right approach. The challenge is that the most effective limescale removers are acidic, and strong acids can damage quartz surfaces.

Safe Removal Method

The safest approach for light to moderate limescale is a diluted solution of white vinegar and water — roughly one part vinegar to three parts water. Apply with a soft cloth, allow contact for 30 to 60 seconds, then wipe away and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Dry the surface immediately. For heavier buildup, a proprietary limescale remover designed for use on stone surfaces can be used with a brief contact time. Always rinse away immediately — do not allow acid-based cleaners to sit on quartz for extended periods.

What to Avoid

  • Industrial descalers: Products containing high concentrations of hydrochloric or phosphoric acid will etch the quartz surface. Never use bathroom or kettle descalers on a worktop.
  • Metal scrapers: Never use a metal razor blade or knife to scrape limescale. Use a soft plastic putty knife only if physical removal is required.

Prevention

The easiest approach is to dry the area around taps and the sink rim after each use, preventing the water from evaporating and leaving its mineral residue. A quick wipe with a dry microfibre cloth takes seconds and prevents significant buildup over time.
