The debate between quartz and granite has defined kitchen renovation conversations for decades. Both materials offer genuine beauty and impressive durability, but they are fundamentally different products with different practical implications. What Each Material Actually Is

Granite is a natural igneous rock, quarried directly from the earth in massive blocks and sliced into slabs. Because it is entirely a product of nature, every slab is unique — no two installations will ever look exactly the same. That uniqueness is part of its appeal, but it also means you cannot guarantee consistency across multiple slabs in a large kitchen.

Engineered quartz is a manufactured composite: approximately 90 to 95 percent crushed natural quartz crystals bound with polymer resins and pigments. The manufacturing process uses vibro-compaction technology in a pressurised vacuum to create an incredibly dense, uniform material. This process gives fabricators precise control over appearance, enabling surfaces that mimic natural marble or achieve bold contemporary colours that nature cannot produce.

Durability and Daily Performance

Both materials rank extremely high on the Mohs hardness scale and resist everyday scratching. The key differences emerge under specific conditions. Quartz benefits from the slight flexibility of its resin binders, making it significantly less prone to chipping if a heavy pan strikes an exposed edge. Natural granite, though incredibly hard, is geologically more brittle and can fracture under extreme localised impact.

Heat resistance is where granite holds a clear advantage. Forged in geothermal heat, granite can withstand hot pots placed directly on its surface (though trivets are still recommended as best practice). Quartz resins can discolour or scorch under sudden intense heat, making heat protection pads mandatory.

The Porosity Difference

This is the most significant functional difference. Natural granite is porous, containing microscopic channels that absorb liquids if left unattended. Red wine, coffee, and cooking oils can stain granite permanently if not sealed regularly — typically once or twice a year. Quartz is entirely non-porous due to its manufacturing process. It never requires sealing, resists bacterial growth, and can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap. For busy family kitchens, this is often the deciding factor.

Cost and Long-Term Value

  • Engineered quartz: £300–£450 per square metre installed. Zero ongoing maintenance costs.
  • Natural granite: £350–£550 per square metre installed. Periodic sealing costs required.

Both materials add significant property value, but quartz offers more predictable long-term costs.
